Reasonable Goal for 1600m time?

Posted by : admin

I am a 19 year old male with 4 seasons of running experience. I ran track my junior year of HS, with a Mile PR of 5:59, I trained for XC the next fall by running over 500 miles in 2 1/2 months, but burned myslef out in the process and my best 5K time (XC) was about 21:30. Track my senior year I ran a PR 5:48 1600(5:50 mile) I trained myself this past summer, and equaled that 5:48/5:50 PR. In the past I have had bad eating habits, and I feel that I finally have refined them in terms of moderation and nutrition, as I unknowingly would eat and bloat myself the night before training sessions or races. NOw I have realized the problem and I am looking for a coach to help me train. I eventually (by spring of my senior year of college, 2010) want to run a sub 4:30 mile. I am willing to train as hard as necessary.I want to run division I track by then. What is a reasonable Mile time goal for this indoor season (this winter) and the following spring/summer outdoor season. Sub-5? sub 5:30, sub450?

Running is mostly mental, after you have done the training then knowing how to race and having the mental toughness to run through the pain is what separates people.

You do not know what you can do if you dedicate yourself to training.

Getting near or under 4:30 is realistic, and you should be under 5:00 this year.

ny record in a mile was 5:47

to get faster just run a little bit more but don’t run too much you might go overboard and get hurt

    It depends on several factors.

    dedication, running form, drive, etc….

I can tell you from personal experience, that anything is possible if you really want it. I was a successful runner in HS. For several years I couldn’t break a 4:45. One race I decided to go out with the leaders, fought the pain, ran faster than I knew I could. I PRed with a 4:15. After that I was continually under 4:15. You need to realize that you can go faster than what your body allows for, but it takes tremendous drive.

I would get done, and puke my guts out. Oxygen-debt. But, I also would have some of the best runners in the state coming up to me, and telling me how much of a "bad-ass" race I ran.

well i am a rugby player and im 17 but i like to run a lot and i did do some competing in the 1500m and the one mile which is 1600m and my PR for it is 4.43 and and about 4.30 for 1500m. But in my school this is only the 3rd best time and the the school record is 4.05 so pretty high standards. so i would say sub 4.50 if you want to run divisionally. you need to be training by running 2000m at the same speed of a 1600m until the last say 200m of the 2000m you need to get a sprint on thats how i trained so that when i came to 1600m run it is shorter and seem easier. gd luck anyway

There are seniors at our high school that run like a sub 4:30, personally my fastest is a 4:50 and its depressing on our team, but if you want a reasonable time and you have 3 years to raise your time up a minute or so, it won’t be too hard. 3 years is a lot of time.
