are there any side-effects?

only if you eat them
there has to be something in the soil they are feeding on-dead wood,tree stump,some organic material. when that is gone the mushrooms will be gone too.

   If you don’t like them get a 9 iron and practice your swing. They just mean your soil is in prety good shape. Just don’t eat them.
