Any one have good ideas on how to keep an army of bunny rabbits out of the garden?

March 62010

For some reason my mother plants a large garden every year, and every year it is decimated by a large group of cute little bunny rabbits. Sometimes I think all she is doing is feeding the rabbits. I can’t help her out because of my health, and she probably cannot errect fences. I do not like the idea of poisoning them (for one thing the neighbor has a bunch of purebred dogs and they are bound to eat one of the rabbits).

Traps seem silly, it would take all year to capture half of them if you caught one each night, and it would be too expensive to set up so many traps.

So I was thinking, what about a natural approach? Is there something natural we can spray that rabbits hate? A scarecrow approach of some kind? Or maybe a sound device? One of the problems with anything electrical is that the garden is at least 200 feet from the nearest outlet.

Keep in mind that she is not a very mobile woman. Also keep in mind that we are talking about a great many bunnies.

my grandfather 75 yrs old also battled with raccoons, deer, rabbits etc. He built a tall chicken wire elcosure ( he hooked it up to an electrical scource, thats optional) it kept all the critters away for years. You can also put chicken wire on the diameter of the garden, that will keep them from digging… i know that some nuserys will set it up for you…good luck

( the voltage was not leathal, no critters were harmed)

What about spraying w/coyote urine? That should keep the deer away too.

I have "raised" gardens and I cover them at night.

I put wire on the bottom so nothing can get through like moles.

I dont have any problems with rabbits, maybe it’s because they cant hop up to the height 2.5 feet.

ask your neighbor if you can borrow a couple of his dog,s…..not to keep …..just to employ them on a rotating shift……you might find him agreeable if you offer to feed them,or help with veterinary fee,s…….probably cheaper than other mean,s……more effective too!

I’m not sure, but I have a good friend who is great with rabbits. Perhaps you’ve heard of him — Elmer Fudd? He’ll be glad to help. It’s a passion of his.
