More specific information:
My trainer always tells me to be softer in my seat. Recently, she’s also been saying that I should have softer hands, but I actually hold the reins pretty loosely, so I don’t really understand that. I jump ahead on some jumps–I’ve been working on it, but I sometimes do jump ahead.

The pony that I ride is super barn sour when he’s in the outdoor arena, so he bulges to the outside when we near the barn. In addition, he moves slower going away from the barn and rushes going towards it.

Any advice about any of these issues would be nice… thanks in advance!

Softer doesn’t necessarily mean "loose." If you ride with loose reins you lose contact with the mouth which can lead to refusal in some horses because they get confused. What you need to do is follow your horses movements, outstretch your elbows to allow greater movement, never losing contact. As for jumping ahead, try to keep your shoulders back, but in a half seat. Wait for the horse’s movement to pull you towards the jump and follow through with your hands so you don’t pull to tight (but be sure not to give your horse all the reins, keep the contact). This is a quick fix that won’t help you in the long run, so after the show, work with your trainer on counting strides to the jump and judging distances, that’s the only way that will really help you.

Hope I helped! I’m still working on getting a barn sour horse (goes faster towards the gate, slower away) to work properly with me. So I can’t give you much advice on that. Sorry!

Okay, so I’m a senior right now in high school, and have been running varsity since freshman year. I also run the 100m, 4×100m, 200m, 4×200m, 400, and 4×400m (pretty sure you know what that means). I can relate to you really well. I’d say for the future, join the cross country team to keep in shape for track, which is what I do. But for now, I’d split up the days, make Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays easier days, and Tuesdays and Thursdays hardcore workout days. On Tuesdays and Thursdays you can do intervals of long distance to keep up stamina and short distances to keep up your speed (long one day short another day). On the easier days, you can do tempo runs (15 minutes of easy jog, 15 minutes of harder run, then 15 minutes of easy jog), or easy jogs. For core workouts i really recommend sit ups, and planks (http://exercise.about.com/od/abs/ss/abexercises_10.htm). The link shows you how to do planks if you do not know. Hope this helps, Good luck!
