Reasonable Goal for 1600m time?

March 82010

I am a 19 year old male with 4 seasons of running experience. I ran track my junior year of HS, with a Mile PR of 5:59, I trained for XC the next fall by running over 500 miles in 2 1/2 months, but burned myslef out in the process and my best 5K time (XC) was about 21:30. Track my senior year I ran a PR 5:48 1600(5:50 mile) I trained myself this past summer, and equaled that 5:48/5:50 PR. In the past I have had bad eating habits, and I feel that I finally have refined them in terms of moderation and nutrition, as I unknowingly would eat and bloat myself the night before training sessions or races. NOw I have realized the problem and I am looking for a coach to help me train. I eventually (by spring of my senior year of college, 2010) want to run a sub 4:30 mile. I am willing to train as hard as necessary.I want to run division I track by then. What is a reasonable Mile time goal for this indoor season (this winter) and the following spring/summer outdoor season. Sub-5? sub 5:30, sub450?

Running is mostly mental, after you have done the training then knowing how to race and having the mental toughness to run through the pain is what separates people.

You do not know what you can do if you dedicate yourself to training.

Getting near or under 4:30 is realistic, and you should be under 5:00 this year.

Why does Sarah Palin want to kill the Alaskan wolves?

March 62010

There is no good ECOLOGICAL, SCIENTIFIC or FINANCIAL reason.
Fat lazy hunters just want it to be easier to kill caribou.

Read the article below before you start spouting facile blather about ‘animal control’. (by the way, Palin’s own Alaska Department of Fish and Game site states that there are about 950,000 wild caribou in Alaska and about 5 million world wide. They are hardly endangered. http://www.adfg.state.ak.us/pubs/notebook/biggame/caribou.php)

"Wolf controls have been tried in Alaska but without great success; bears, not wolves, were found to be taking the largest share of ungulates. So wolf numbers may, or may not, significantly impact prey numbers in Alaska.

And as Dr. Kenneth Raedeke, a wildlife specialist at the University of Washington observes, "having a brown bear control program, even in Alaska, is not (politically) acceptable." This gets to the heart of the matter: the nature of political decision-making. The decision to
control wolf populations was made on the basis of political power, not science, economic efficiency or environmental sensitivity. Wolves, apparently, are thought to be politically acceptable targets while bears are not.

In Alaska, Gov. Walter Hickel [1990-1994] and special-interest groups such as the Alaska Outdoor Council, a coalition of outfitters, hunters and bush pilots, have used the levers of political control over natural
resources to their advantage, regardless of ecological effects. They want to make it easier for hunters to kill moose and caribou by increasing their populations, even though, as the director of Alaska
Division of Wildlife Conservation admits, "there are no real shortages of big-game animals in Alaska." This is the predictable result of bureaucratic management in a political environment."

http://www.free-eco.org/articleDisplay.php?id=338

I believe in keeping animal populations under control. Which is why I myself hunt. But I believe that hunting animals from the air is not fair.

I sort of like Palin, but this is what makes me not really like her. When she supports the unfair killing of these beautiful animals.

A girl is murdered while sleeping in a tent in the back yard. Do you remember the title of this TV movie?

March 42010

Based on a real-life case, this involved two families who are next-door neighbors and best friends. They have a picnic or barbecue, and the teenage daughter of one of the families asks if she can camp out with the other neighbors’ daughter in a tent set up in their fenced-in back yard. Prior to that, the girls have a run-in with the neighborhood bad boy and his buddies, but no one thinks anymore of it~till later. Sometime during the night, the girl at whose house they’re staying goes indoors, perhaps because it’s more comfortable there or because she has argued with the other girl. I don’t recall the reason.

In the morning, when the outdoor girl hasn’t come to the house for breakfast, they check on her and are shocked to find her dead, lying on her back, a pillow over her face. The other teen girl notices that there is a bandana lying next to the body, an article of clothing she believes belongs to the tough boy. This incident causes a fierce division between these former best friends, especially when the police point to the son of the host family as being a likely candidate for the crime, claiming he sexually attacked the girl then murdered her.

Later, it is shown that the police are so confident in their choice of murderer that they make errors in collecting evidence, either mislabelling evidence, leaving items behind, and, it is discovered later, allowing some of it to be destroyed before it can be examined again! I don’t recall the outcome of the case, but I think the accused boy’s name was cleared. I don’t think the police ever focused on the boys who had accosted the girls earlier.

I think I saw this on Lifetime, but it might have been on some other network station, such as USA. It’s definitely a made-for-television movie. I might recognize the name if I saw it, and I’ve been checking listings for many months till asking about it. Frustratingly, I can’t recall who plays any of the parents, but I seem to recall that they are "TV name" actors, fairly well-known to audiences. I would estimate this film being from the mid- to late 1990s, but it could have been made in the 2000s. It would be difficult to judge from its style. I’m generally good at tracking down movies, but I’ve used many keywords and phrases to search the real-life case and the movie. I thought I’d toss this out to see how quickly it will be identified.

Moment of Truth: Murder or Memory? (1994) (TV)
A young man, while under hypnosis, confesses to a brutal murder. But did he really do it?

"Very good film showing how the police can go overboard when things look bad for a suspect. A murder is committed during an overnight party at a home and a boy is the prime suspect after he becomes confused over his actions after the party was over. He couldn’t remember whether or not he did the crime; leading to his arrest, the ostracization of the family, and a big court action. Do attorneys really go home with their clients and have dinner with them?"….as per ‘helpless dancer’ poster on IMDB.

Is this an ok essay for college applications?

March 22010

I will always remember the summer prior to my senior year. I had my first job at the local veterans’ hospital. I waited anxiously the first day trying to figure out where to go and what I was supposed to do. I realized I would be working in the division with the elders and I was extremely excited to begin this opportunity. I knew I would learn so many fascinating things and hear countless stories. My experience that summer exceeded my expectations.
One of my most pleasurable tasks was visiting the residents. A lot of them had no family or friends to visit them so when I stopped to talk to them they were especially happy to see someone care enough to stop and talk to them. I was even happier because this is when I learned a lot about the people that have served our country. One gentleman named Jim stood out. I spent many hours with him just talking about the war and many other various topics. In addition to just talking we did many other things together throughout the summer. We went to outdoor barbeques, played games and told jokes. One of the most spectacular things was that he always thanked me and told me I was a great person and this meant a lot to me. I think what made him stand out to me was that he was like a grandfather in that he cared, respected and helped me in so many ways.
In the future I want to work with people so that I can feel myself making a difference like I did here. I know that I will succeed because I have goals of going to college and getting a career in a field where I can help people. Going to college is one step towards accomplishing this. Whether I become a teacher, Social worker or work with the elders I hope that I can make a difference in the society we live in.

The question is…….
Your essay should tell us more about yourself and should include information such as your interests, any circumstances which may have affected your academic performance, or individuals, or events, which may have had a significant impact on your life.

Ok well it is a good essay but I am going to be very critical because it is for college applications.

I think that your first paragraph does not flow very well and you say "I" too much.

I think that it should be a new paragraph when you start talking about Jim.

Also you really do not have a thesis statement. Something that brings the entire paper together. I think this would work:
"My experience that summer exceeded my expectations. I learned just how important vetrans are to our country and I because of them I want to make a difference."

I also do not think that you need to say "I know that I will succeed because I have goals of going to college and getting a career in a field where I can help people." because that is pretty obvious since you are writing this essay for a college application. Mabye rewrite it "I know that I will succeed becuase I have a pasion for helping people and I have the motivation to do well in college"

I just feel that your entire essay needs a bit more detail in it.

One quick suggestion: You use "talk" way to much. Try changing it up a bit.

How fast do I have to be to run intercollegiate track?

February 262010

It is intercollegiate. University of Southern Maine Outdoor track. Does intercollegiate mean it is Division III? My event in high school was the 800m run. My best time was a 2:11. I am thinking this is too slow. Should I even bother considering I have been out of practice for so long? That was my sophomore year in highschool. I am a sophomore in college now transferring to USM.

Intercollegiate track simply means that you’re competing against other colleges, it has nothing to do with which division you’re competing in. University of Southern Maine is Division III. Since you ran 2:11 back in your sophomore year of high school, you could probably run faster as long as you’ve stayed in shape since then. Also, since Division III has such a wide range of athletes, I doubt they’d have a problem with you competing, but you’re still going to see times that are much faster (in the low- to mid-1:50 range). I run Division I track, and I sometimes see 800 runners in the low 2:00’s as well.
