When should I start planting in my outside garden?

March 122010

I live in Southwest Michigan and I am a freshly turned vegetarian. I think it would be beneficial for my health a little bit. My father used to garden when we first moved in, and we have a large, long spot. I was just curious when is a good time to start planting and what I should be planting.

i’m from upstate NY, similar climate i started my garden middle to end of April no later than May .depending on the weather. sometimes winter doesn’t know when to leave in my neck of the woods

corn., tomatoes, green peppers , cucumber, green beans, squashes, radishes, check with your local nursery they will answer all your questions or go to the library and research. try researching on your computer quicker! good luck hope your thumb turns green.

Are raw cashews dangerous, like the ones you buy in the health food store?

March 102010

I have been eating them for months w/ no problems but someone just told me that they should not be eaten raw. He specified that they should not be eaten while harvesting. So I am wondering if out of the garden raw is the same as raw in the health food store?

Every so often, a well-meaning Co-op customer will alert us to the information that raw cashews are toxic. While it is true that in their natural state, the cashew nut or kernel is encased in a shell that contains caustic oils, these oils are extracted from the shell and used industrially. Even “raw” cashews are processed to remove this oil, and so are safe to eat.

People who are allergic to cashews cannot eat them at all, cooked or not. Cooking does not affect allergens and does not render food safe for someone with a true allergy.

I have heard that chickens are good to have in vegetable garden for organic pest control. Is it safe?

March 82010

Is it safe to have the unaged chicken poop all over the ground in veggie garden from the chickens running around? Please site references NOT an uninformed opinion. People’s health at stake here!!!! Thanks!

You cannot allow chickens to have free run of your garden. Their poop is unsanitary for food crops plus it is hot and would injure or kill a lot of your crop plants. On top of that the chickens would decimate the entire garden in less than a day (unless it is more than 1/2 acre, than it might take 2 to 3 days to kill everything).

Keep the garden and chickens separated during the growing season by fencing in one or the other (I vote giving the hens a large fenced area). During off season put a fence up around the garden area and let them in. They will weed and feed the area plus dig up all sorts of underground larva, both good and bad.

Compost the poop and put it on the garden anytime after it is composted.

Any one have good ideas on how to keep an army of bunny rabbits out of the garden?

March 62010

For some reason my mother plants a large garden every year, and every year it is decimated by a large group of cute little bunny rabbits. Sometimes I think all she is doing is feeding the rabbits. I can’t help her out because of my health, and she probably cannot errect fences. I do not like the idea of poisoning them (for one thing the neighbor has a bunch of purebred dogs and they are bound to eat one of the rabbits).

Traps seem silly, it would take all year to capture half of them if you caught one each night, and it would be too expensive to set up so many traps.

So I was thinking, what about a natural approach? Is there something natural we can spray that rabbits hate? A scarecrow approach of some kind? Or maybe a sound device? One of the problems with anything electrical is that the garden is at least 200 feet from the nearest outlet.

Keep in mind that she is not a very mobile woman. Also keep in mind that we are talking about a great many bunnies.

my grandfather 75 yrs old also battled with raccoons, deer, rabbits etc. He built a tall chicken wire elcosure ( he hooked it up to an electrical scource, thats optional) it kept all the critters away for years. You can also put chicken wire on the diameter of the garden, that will keep them from digging… i know that some nuserys will set it up for you…good luck

( the voltage was not leathal, no critters were harmed)

Tips on how to have the best vegetable garden?

March 42010

I’ve been planning on having a vegetable garden this summer I had one last year and it turned out ok except for some veggies. I need some advice from someone who has had a veggie garden for a number of years, or even just a casual gardener. And what veggies or fruits are good for your health in that they fight off disease?
10 points for anyone that can give a good educated answer

There is a secret to growing the nicest veggies you’ll ever have: Soil prep!

Weed out the bed. Wait a week and weed again (hand weed because you don’t want chemicals on your food). Wait one more week and weed once more. Now head off to your local bulk soil seller (with a pickup truck) and buy a yard of fine compost. Spread at least a 3 inch layer of compost over your garden bed (a 2 inch layer of composted manure could go down now, but some people don’t like to use it). Dig in the compost nice and deep, about a foot down into your soil (it’s almost like digging in and flipping the soil over). Not only are you improving the soil fertility, but you’re making that soil nice and soft so the roots of the veggie plants can spread out easily. Smooth everything out and now you’re ready to plant (wait until all danger of frosty weather is gone).

The bed should have a good 6 hours of hot afternoon sun for the best vegetables and you need to keep the soil moist, but not soggy. Letting the plants wilt once or twice is one thing, constantly letting those plants get too dry will invite fungus and bugs to your sickly plants. So will weeds that get outta hand. So keep it watered and hand weeded, and then fertilizer with an organic vegetable fertilizer.

How do I control, not necessarily prevent, birds from coming to my garden pond?

February 282010

Hi ther! So I’ve posted before re: garden ponds. At first it was murky water, then dead birds, and now… too many birds! I love nature, but the old addage "too much of a good thing" definitely applies to my pond. I don’t mind birds seeking water, a quick bath, etc. (after all, that’s the point, I know), but I seem to be getting TOO many visitors. Today I cam ehome to an abundance of bird excrement in, on and around the pond. Had to drain it again (gross), clean the stones and water in the stuff on the plants surrounding. Is there any thing to help "control" the feather friends, or should I just fill in the hole and give up? For health reasons, smell and ultimately just plain appearance, I can’t have another day like today. Thanks for your suggestions!

Buy a bird bath as an alternative to using your pond. No guarantees , but better than netting the area. How many, and which types of bird can cause you to drain your pond ? Surely only Ducks ?

How many different garden gnomes do the nice folks at Travelocity have on staff?

February 262010

And what kind of benefits do they get besides free travel? Health insurance, 401(k), what? Are they unionized? If I were 3 feet shorter, could I be one? I mean, I can grow a beard and everything . . .

Just asking.

Oh yeah, and are they discriminatory? I’ve never seen a female garden gnome on any Travelocity commercials. Perhaps the female garden gnome population can bring a class-action lawsuit.

Thanks all!

I think there are a lot, like oompa loompas.

We have an electricity pylon in our garden, can we get it moved on health and safety grounds? Who should pay?

February 242010

If you bought the house and it was already there, I think it’s unlikely that you can get it moved unless you can prove that it is causing a nuisance or health problems. I think you would need proper legal advice from a solicitor. But it would be interesting to see if anyone else answering has had a similar experience and actually won and had a pylon removed from their property.
