What happens to private health insurance companies if American health care is nationalized?

March 302010

Few would be willing to dish out for private coverage while they are receiving health care from government taxation. Would the private health industry perhaps dwindle down to a few big players and be forced to take a hit by improving coverage and care?
I’m well aware health care won’t be nationalized. I meant to indicate this is a hypothetical question.

~~This is a mute point because Nationalized insurance is not in the works. All the government is proposing is an alternative for people who can’t get employer based insurance to be able to buy directly from the same insurance that senators and congressmen get. Otherwise, business as usual for private insurance companies.~~

Adorable Puppy Explains Health Care Bill

March 272010

Posted in health | 25 Comments »

In which John offers a summary of the health care reform bill that just passed the U.S. senate, discussing the insurance exchange market, pre-existing condition clauses, medicare taxes, and other fine points of the still-under-debate bill. Here’s a good explanation of how the insurance exchanges will look like: http://bit.ly/eIwNE

Thanks to Alan Lastufka
( http://youtube.com/fallofautumndistro ) for the Ben Nelson asshat photo.

About abortion: The senate plan works like this: Policies covering abortion would be available in the exchange market (at least in some states), but those plans would have to collect two separate premiums–one covering everything other than abortion, and one for abortion coverage. The subsidy (available to all families making less than about $88,000 a year depending on number of kids) would only apply to the non-abortion policy.

If this seems like a hilariously stupid distinction, that’s because it is. Ultimately, it of course doesn’t matter which policy the subsidy goes toward. But then again, every federal program “supports” abortion in some way. For instance, without federally funded highways, it would be impossible for most women to get abortions. All government spending indirectly goes to support all activity in America, but it’s ridiculous to say that, for instance, food stamps encourage meth use, even though sometimes people trade meth for food they bought with food stamps. It’s equally disingenuous to say that this bill will allow federal funding of abortions, unless you’re willing to argue that all government spending funds abortion.

can you get free birth control from the health dept?

March 262010

i am trying to get the paragard IUD from the health dept here in Oklahoma and they are wanting me to fill out an application claiming our household income, i thought you could just get it for free? why do I have to fill out an application?

Try Planned Parenthood. It won’t be free but it will be cheaper than going to a doctor. When I got birth control pills from them I filled out an application because they price them according to a sliding scale. They needed to know our household income to see how much we could afford. I imagine it’s the same reason for the Dept of Health but I’m not sure.Maybe they need it for statistics or something

What "grey water" from your home could be used to water a garden? Shower, bathroom sink, kitchen sink?

March 262010

Will the health department (in the US) jump up and down, if you ran pipes to connect these forms of water, along with a rain collecting container, and a pump to disburse, instead of using water from our well, on a garden?

maybe OK for flower but I would also look for where is your well at? don’t know if you should take and use gray water around a well area. By the way I’m a building inspector and wells have to be tested before the sale of any house and there check will include a test for nitrates in the water.
