How do I control, not necessarily prevent, birds from coming to my garden pond?

February 282010

Hi ther! So I’ve posted before re: garden ponds. At first it was murky water, then dead birds, and now… too many birds! I love nature, but the old addage "too much of a good thing" definitely applies to my pond. I don’t mind birds seeking water, a quick bath, etc. (after all, that’s the point, I know), but I seem to be getting TOO many visitors. Today I cam ehome to an abundance of bird excrement in, on and around the pond. Had to drain it again (gross), clean the stones and water in the stuff on the plants surrounding. Is there any thing to help "control" the feather friends, or should I just fill in the hole and give up? For health reasons, smell and ultimately just plain appearance, I can’t have another day like today. Thanks for your suggestions!

Buy a bird bath as an alternative to using your pond. No guarantees , but better than netting the area. How many, and which types of bird can cause you to drain your pond ? Surely only Ducks ?

Would it be cheaper to go to whole foods for supplements and food or a small private ran health shop?

February 282010

It depends, go there for yourself and compare prices; probably the private ran health shop would be more expensive, but you never know.

Could the same blue light that treats acne also promote oral health?

February 282010

I know that the blue 405-420 nanometer wavelength blue light has provided significant sub-dermal bacteria reduction. Could it do the same for sub-gingival bacteria?

The answer is "no" for several reasons. First, oral bacteria is completely different from dermal bacteria. None of the strains of oral microbes have been shown to have their growth be altered by exposure to any type of light, including the blue light range.

Secondly, subgingival bacteria is just that: deeply embedded beneath the overlying tissues. As such, light is not able to penetrate sufficiently to effect any changes.

I hope this helps.

is this an ok essay for college applications?

February 282010

I will always remember the summer prior to my senior year. I had my first job at the local veterans’ hospital. I waited anxiously the first day trying to figure out where to go and what I was supposed to do. I realized I would be working in the division with the elders and I was extremely excited to begin this opportunity. I knew I would learn so many fascinating things and hear countless stories. My experience that summer exceeded my expectations.
One of my most pleasurable tasks was visiting the residents. A lot of them had no family or friends to visit them so when I stopped to talk to them they were especially happy to see someone care enough to stop and talk to them. I was even happier because this is when I learned a lot about the people that have served our country. One gentleman named Jim stood out. I spent many hours with him just talking about the war and many other various topics. In addition to just talking we did many other things together throughout the summer. We went to outdoor barbeques, played games and told jokes. One of the most spectacular things was that he always thanked me and told me I was a great person and this meant a lot to me. I think what made him stand out to me was that he was like a grandfather in that he cared, respected and helped me in so many ways.
In the future I want to work with people so that I can feel myself making a difference like I did here. I know that I will succeed because I have goals of going to college and getting a career in a field where I can help people. Going to college is one step towards accomplishing this. Whether I become a teacher, Social worker or work with the elders I hope that I can make a difference in the society we live in.

The question is…….
Your essay should tell us more about yourself and should include information such as your interests, any circumstances which may have affected your academic performance, or individuals, or events, which may have had a significant impact on your life.

One quick suggestion: You use "talk" way to much. Try changing it up a bit.

Do the old consume too much health care? How should health care resources be distributed across the population?

What are each generations obligations to those before and those after them? Do the old consume too much health care? What is too much? How should health care resources be distributed across the population? Should health care be explicitly rationed on the basis of age?

Interesting question. How many young people, say 30 and younger have paid into a health insurance plan since they were first employed? How many of these have had extreme health issues that otherwise would have wiped them out? Truth is, and the insurance companies know, is that the youth have *always* subsidized the elderly because statistically, one is more likely to need to *use* health insurance when one is older, than when one is younger. So, younger folks premiums go to the cost and care of those who are older. In a way, not unlike a Ponzi scheme.

Is this bad? In strict terms of the youth subsidizing their older compatriots, no. But when it gets dicey is that the youth get old eventually, and when they get their insurance revolked because of a pre-existing condition, or, they have become too expensive to cover and subsequently get cancelled by their health insurance company, that’s when it becomes criminal.

So, short answer, no. There should be a Public Option that ensures the health care of everyone.
